Mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide, cardiolipin & bioenergetics research

About this compound

SS-31, also known as elamipretide or MTP-131, is a small mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide with the sequence D-Arg-2,6-dimethyltyrosine-Lys-Phe-NH2. Its alternating aromatic-cationic residue pattern allows it to concentrate at the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it selectively associates with cardiolipin, a phospholipid central to inner-membrane architecture and electron transport chain organization.

Research interest in SS-31 centers on mitochondrial bioenergetics, including electron transport chain function, ATP synthesis efficiency, and the reactive oxygen species generated during oxidative phosphorylation. Its cardiolipin-binding mechanism has made it a widely used tool compound in cell and tissue models of mitochondrial dysfunction.

Supplied as a sterile lyophilized powder. Reconstitute with bacteriostatic water for in vitro laboratory use only. Not for human or veterinary administration.
